I had a very fun weekend! On Saturday, Alan and I went to a wedding brunch given for us by my aunt, uncle, cousin (their son) and his wife. It was so lovely! My cousin’s wife had decorated with fresh flowers from her yard which were beautiful: purple irises, deep pink azaleas, pastel semi-tulip-looking things I don’t know the name of, daffodils - my aunt always sets a lovely table anyway, with china, crystal, linens, napkin rings, etc. and with all the fresh flowers it was simply gorgeous.
They served mimosas while everyone arrived. Alan’s parents and brother came up from Augusta, Nancy, Mark, Lachele, Cheryl, Joy and my parents from various nearby suburbs. The ‘cocktail hour’ was stretched a little because Google maps showed a road as connecting two others, when in fact it does not so a few people had to regroup, backtrack, call for rescue, etc. We were almost late ourselves as the highway was down to one lane because of construction - something we had no idea about beforehand and so didn’t plan accordingly - but we made it on time. I quite enjoyed having the guests arriving in staggered formation instead of all at once; this made it nice because we (and the hosts, who hadn’t met a lot of our friends) got to chat one-on-one with people as they arrived and had a few minutes with each before the next arrival and set of introductions.
The food was incredible! Aunt Betty had made this breakfast casserole of eggs, sausage, cheese and peppers which was wonderfully spicy. Along with that we had croissants, asparagus with tasty red pepper and a frozen fruit cup that was sort of like a Waldorf salad, but better. They also had a three-tier dessert tray with five or six kinds of tiny delectables like eclairs, sponge-cake rolls, truffles, petit fours (drool drool drool).
They’d already sent us a wedding gift but my aunt wanted us to have something “to commemorate the occasion” so the hosts gave us this beautiful lead crystal serving platter. Nancy and Mark gave us a mortar and pestle, which Alan had unpacked and was grinding peppercorns in it as soon as we arrived home. Joy gave us this dark wooden keepsake box with the picture that Nancy took of Alan and me on Broad street in Athens inlaid into the lid. On the picture, Joy had our names and the wedding date. I wasn’t expecting gifts but these were wonderful!
Sunday wasn’t as fun for one of our family. Despite his protestations that he’d done this once this year already, Sprocket had a haircut, bath and flea treatment. After I cleaned myself up from that adventure, I wrote out thank-you notes for the party, the gifts and a couple of wedding gifts we’ve received. I even remembered to bring the notes with me today for posting! After that, I had a nap. Sunday naps are the best.
