At first, this decision pissed me off. The Leafs have had some good seasons under Pat Quinn (i.e., making it to the final 4 in the Stanley Cup playoffs), so to me the factor for this bad season must be JFJ. JFJ plus Belfour -- why Ferguson didn't trade for a goalie I'll never understand. The Leafs also suffered a ton of injuries, which aren't Quinn's fault.
On the other hand, when the Leafs went through their "sucky Spring", Quinn was always messing with the lines. He kept switching who played with whom, and that couldn't have improved things. When the Leafs finally started to play better, they had a solid goalie *and* the lines were consistent, so I think those two issues should have been fixed earlier in the season.
I don't know if you've read the Ken Dryden book, "The Game" -- it's the driest, most intensive look at professional hockey you'd ever want to read. After finishing it, I came to the conclusion that NHL coaches don't really do anything but put lines together. It certainly makes Scotty Bowman look like Joe Average and not Coaching Genius.
