BIG BIG NEWS!!!

Well, "big" being a relative term. Anyway, I wanted to keep it quiet until it was official, but Alan and I have decided to adopt!

We picked up our little bundle of joy yesterday afternoon!

He has an impressive ear-span.
He doesn't have a name yet; so far we've just been calling him The New Kid.

Alan favours Gadget, Widget or Gizmo to keep the Sprocket theme going.

I like either Gaspode The Wonder Dog or Mr. Fusspot, famous dogs from Terry Pratchett novels.

Maria, what is Spanish for "I have seriously ginormous ears"?

Any suggestions, dear readers? Please, suggest names - I'll give a prize if we use yours. Keep it clean(ish), we have to register his name with the AKC.

Oh, in case you can't tell, The New Kid is a long-haired Chihuahua, though we are told it can take as long as two years for his coat to come in fully.

We got him from THE NICEST PEOPLE, Lynda and Robbie of Chihuahua Depot. I want to go back and get more - they're small, they don't eat much. I need about two hundred head of Chihuahua. In fact, there was one cuddly little guy I want to go back and get NOW. There was also the cutest little short-haired fellow who jumped all over me, chewed on my fingers and shoes, tugged on my pants - but he had already been sold. I need more puppehs. And kittehs.

  • Awwwwww what a cutie patootie! He's gonna give Sprocket a run for his money . . . I think Hershey is reconsidering.

  • Awww! Teh CUTEz0R!!

As for the name, you have to imagine shouting it across the park or wherever you are walking him. He looks like a 'Buster' to me ... :-)

  • Thanks, Margarita! I'll show The New Kid some Hershey pix.

Neil - your comment reminded me of an acquaintance who named his dog "Elvis". He said he felt like quite the dumbass wandering around his neighborhood yelling, "Elvis! Elvis! ELLL-VIS!" once when Elvis escaped.

  • Grandmamma is very proud to have a new grandpup! Welcome, New Kid! (I'm with Alan on the naming -leaning toward Widget, myself. Although calling for 'Fussy' if he got out....heh heh)

  • Alan: Are we going to Petco today or tomorrow? We need to get him his own crate.

Helly: You think? 'Cause I was just gonna stick him in my purse.

  • "Manolito" (for a famous matador from Hemingway's time in Pamplona in the late 20s)

  • My recommendation would be "Boat Anchor" as I really dislike Chihuahuas.

That said, "Gaspode the Wonder Dog" gets my vote.

    cheers,
    Phil

  • Awwww, he's adorable!! It's hard not to write this comment entirely in babytalk, he's just that cute. I don't think of gadgets or widgets when I hear the word "sprocket." Rather, I think of Mike Meyers prancing around in a black leotard saying, "Now is the time that we dance." Not sure how that helps with the naming dilemma, though.

    How's Sprocket taking the newcomer?

  • Sprocket is totally and completely ignoring him. He will try to follow Sprocket around or cuddle up, and Sprocket will get up and move, or hop up somewhere The New Kid is too short to reach. I was afraid there would be hostility and aggression, but I never suspected total indifference.

  • AWWWW!!! Is that the most precious lil' pup evah?? I know y'all are just totally in love with The New Kid.

Kev has a name suggestion: how about "Lord Kinbote" as a simultaneous shout-out to The X-Files and Nabakov!

  • BATMAN! That is totally my vote.

We're off to the SuperZoo convention this week, the one where we get so many freebies that we often have to bypass some offers because our car isn't big enough to hold them all. I will acquire a collection of samples of the latest and greatest doggie and kitty treats for your three charges (welcoming gifts for the Caped Crusader, and don't-be-jealous gifts for the others) :)

Wait, is Batman the Caped Crusader or is that Superman?

Congratulations! I hope this slightly eases the pain of Tom Brady... wow, what a freakish thing. Pick up his backup, whoever he is -- he'll do fine with such good receivers. The other available QBs are slim pickings, and I think you'll do well sticking with a NE QB. Go, do it now!

  • I think his name should be Whizmo, which is like Gizmo, but more, uh, real life.

Even though I, like Phil, am a Chihuahua hater, it looks like you got one of the better ones. Not the scrawny shivery bitey kind. :)
Congrats on the new edition to your home.

  • Hi, Helly! Greetings from the Left Coast, and congrats on your new arrival... he's adorable! Thems are some ears, girlfriend! I had to laugh, because as soon as the page came up, I saw this adorable little face, and as I read "He doesn't have a name yet..." I immediately thought, "Well, of course his name should be Gadget..." and then a second later I saw that Alan favors that name. So for the record, that name gets my vote. Ciao for now!

  • Name him Battie! from the furngully :D Big ears = Battie :D

  • also... I think my miss Ashia (asia) baisha has chihuahua in her. Her features you can see two breeds in her now, but I think she has some chihuahua in her.

Ears and exsessive jumping - Jack Russell

Under Bite and Curly Cue Tail - Shih Tzu

Skinny (10 lbs, Buggy Eyes, tiny Mouth - I think is Chihuahua

As for the new guy and old man getting along... give it a few days. Ashia did not like Falkor one bit the first day or so. She was so angry about it... (She wasn't the only child anymore) that was on a thursday, by friday night after a night at the bar, they were playing and loving each other :)

But he is really cute! least he isn't a toy one, where they shiver and don't do anything LOL

  • Anyone with big ears would be called "Chore"in mexico. That's CHORE-eh. Like Chore, but with an eh sound at the end. And probably more fluid like. Choreh. It's a derivation from Pinche Orejon. Pinche being an insult and orejon meaning big ears. (the j is pronounced like your h sound in honey).

Anyway, gots to go make a sandwich for shcool. Love.

  • Thanks, everyone, for your kind remarks on The New Kid! JOY! Joy, it's great to hear from you. Hope everything is going well for you after the big move!

By Blogger Helly, at 12:05 PM

  • You mean Chihuahua is a dog? I thought it was the name of the biggest state in Mexico. Or maybe a cheese. But it's a dog as well?

As for names: football is always a good name. Deefer (as in D for dog). Or, the old fall back, Screamin' Jay Hawkins.

  • Sorry for my late entry and congrats on the new addition to the family! Sticking with the X-Files references I nominate "Queeqeg".
