The Hellhole

I’m having the mostest fun playing Yahoo Fantasy Hockey! Flippy started a league and invited me to play - w00T! My brother has a team, too. We had our live draft Saturday evening. I got nearly all the players I wanted and all the ones I had my heart set on. I kinda wanted Luongo in goal but Flippy got to him first. I went back-and-forth about Keith Tkachuck, who I wanted muchly, but he’s wounded and it’s not known when he’ll be back, so I was afraid to burn a slot with an injured player. Bo says that, the way it works, I can trade for him later if I really want to, so that’s cool.

My team is the U.U. Wizards - a nod to my favorite fantasy/sci-fi author Terry Pratchett: Unseen University is the wizard academy of Ankh-Morpork. I love Terry - just bought his latest Discworld paperback, Going Postal, Saturday but I haven’t read it yet. Here is a funny Pratchett quote for you: “Of course, just because we've heard a spine-chilling, blood-curdling scream of the sort to make your very marrow freeze in your bones doesn't automatically mean there's anything wrong.” And because one good quote deserves another, here: “His philosophy was a mixture of three famous schools -- the Cynics, the Stoics and the Epicureans -- and summed up all three of them in his famous phrase, ‘You can't trust any bugger further than you can throw him, and there's nothing you can do about it, so let's have a drink.’"

Bo’s team is the Courscant Imperials, a nod to Star Wars. We didn’t discuss our team names beforehand and it resulted in an unfortunate moment of confusion for another player, who asked if we had some sort of KKK thing going on - the Imperials? The Wizards? Ha ha, no! No pointy hoods ‘round here. And our fantasy baseball team is the Schutzstaffel Saints, merely a coincidence. Sorry, just a little Nazi humour to start the week off right. Because if you can’t laugh at Nazis, who CAN you laugh at?

Anyway, back to fantasy hockey. I got Bryan McCabe, Brendan Shanahan, Peter Bondra AND Dominik Hasek, among others. I’m pleased. Right now we’re all tied for first, because our retro stat counter hasn’t activated yet. I don’t mind if I’m in last place so long as it’s not embarrassingly bad; Bo says he thinks I’ll do okay. I should - there’s not one stinkin’ ‘Lanche in my lineup.

  • Crud, with all that was going on today doctor-wise, I forgot to set up my team. Consider it a gift. :)
