The Hellhole

At dinnertime the other day I was in one of those moods where I couldn't decide what I wanted, but nothing in the cupboards or 'fridge appealed to me. So I figured I'd eat a peanut butter sandwich, rummaged around in the cupboard and found Alan's (extra crunchy) peanut butter, kept foraging and was happy to discover a jar of my (smooth) peanut butter. I was pleased at this and gaily preparing to make my sammich when Alan said, "I don't remember us buying that peanut butter. How old is it, anyway?"

Um.

Er, um.

It expired in 1998.

I didn't eat it but now I'm thinking maybe I should have, because peanut butter that old would probably have produced some groovy hallucinations, and I don't want my senior years to be filled with regrets over things I didn't do.

  • Firstly, ewwwww 1998 expirations. But more importantly, ewwww to smooth peanut butter. I'm a Skippy Super Crunch girl, although when Reese's was available, that was my preference. It was deliciously peanut buttery...and extra sugary.

  • We agree that peanut butter = Jif, always and no matter what, but we are a house divided when it comes to consistency.

  • This post makes me ponder cleaning out my cupboards. I think I still have spices and stuff that I got from my Mom and Dad when I moved out for the first time (in 1991) -- I don't use them, I just have them.

I'm glad you didn't eat the ancient peanut butter.

Oh, and if you're polling peanut preferences we like Adam's 100% natural peanut butter. It needs to be stirred and kept in the fridge but it has no trans fats or sugars and (once you get used to it) it is SO yummy!

  • If you have to keep it in the fridge, isn't it difficult to spread? Being cold, I mean.

  • I'm a big time hater of natural peanut butter. Leigh-Ann's dad bought it when he was here. I tried it a couple of times, but I don't like having to stir my pb, plus it felt like it was missing something important, like sugar. We bought natural for the dogs though.
