The Hellhole

I have something very interesting to share with cat fanciers. Here is an article Alan found about kitty communication. The basics are that, left to themselves, adult cats don't meow; to communicate, they use scent language, body language and facial expression. Why do they meow? To communicate with their humans, because it turns out that we're too dumb to understand scent language or interpret facial expressions. I found that utterly fascinating: they meow because they had to dumb it down for humans. It put Finnovar's strident treat demand (which is different from his 'hello', 'what's up', and 'the fuzzy thing's been misbehaving' meows) in a whole new light. I know now that he's thinking, "How did this stupid girl evolve thumbs before I did?!? She doesn't even understand facial expressions! *put-upon sigh* 'Me-OW! Me-OW, stupid girl! Treats! Treats!' Do you get it now?!?"

I have more news and some great pictures, but am out of time. More later.

  • Hmmm, I guess cats think fish are too dumb to understand too. Tie sits and watches the plecostamus swim around (or, really, mostly just sit in one spot) the tank, but sometimes Tie gets so excited that he squeals. Since he discovered the fish, he's spent part of every single day downstairs watching the fish. None of the other cats do it, even when he tried to teach Scampi about the fun of fish watching, Scampi never bothered with it again.

  • I wonder if he's merely enjoying the fish-watching, or if he's wondering how it would taste lightly sauteed in a little lemon butter.
