The Hellhole

This has been an odd weekend - not bad, but very different from how I expected it. A couple of months ago, my brother told me to keep this weekend free because our friends Rob and Erin were planning to spend the weekend in Athens for the UGA/University of Colorado game. I hadn't seen them since they'd moved to Louisville, KY so I was quite looking forward to it. I didn't have tickets to the game and didn't try to score any since Alan loathes football [actual quote: "I'd rather have root canals without anesthesia than go to a UGA game"], but last time we were there, we asked at our favorite Athens hotel about a room that weekend, thinking we could hang out with Rob & Erin outside of game time. The hotel was not only full, but had a waiting list about 400 people long; we forgot about being able to stay in Athens but still planned to be there at some point this weekend. Rob and Erin had met Alan only once and didn't realize he was anything other than a friend - I wanted to show off my husband and they wanted to get to know him. They were trying to cement their plans of what they were doing when, and we planned to be in Athens to hang out with them whenever worked.

Then my salesweasel gave me two tickets to the UGA game for my birthday! He actually remembered that I'd said my friends would be in town for that game - how sweet is THAT?!? Alan looked at me with "please, honey, no" pleading eyes so I consulted with Bo. He decided to give his student ticket to a friend who wanted to go, and he and I would use my tickets. Alan was going to go to Athens with me and hang out with other friends to pass the time while we were at the game, and the plan to hook up with Rob and Erin was still on. Until Thursday when Erin's car died and the money they'd budgeted for their trip had to be redirected to car repairs. They weren't coming. After some discussion, we decided that we'd still go to Athens, I'd attend the game with Bo, and the hanging out afterward would be with Bo & Sarah, and/or some of our other friends who live in Athens, even though the whole point in the first place wasn't going to the Colorado game, but seeing Rob & Erin. This alternate plan lasted about a day, until 9:15 Saturday morning, when Bo called and croaked, "I'm glad I caught you before you left...I'm face down with a sinus headache and running a fever."

I knew Alan wanted to go to the football game about as much as he wanted me to set his beard on fire, so I called The Boss and asked if he knew anyone who wanted my tickets. One of our clients had tickets but wanted extra, and was heading through my town en route to the game at that very moment. So we took off, met the guy at a Waffle House and handed over my tickets. I was disappointed that I wouldn't see my friends, that Bo & I weren't going to the game, but glad the tickets weren't going to waste.

Back at home after our ticket-delivery mission, we were in weird moods, sort of at a loss. There we were, up, dressed and rarin' to go at 10:00 on a Saturday morning (very unusual for us) but with nothing to do. By this time, we were too alert and awake to go back to bed but it was too early for many things that we'd normally do. It was an odd, at-a-loss but adrenalized sort of feeling. More because we needed a mission than because he was in danger of starving, we decided to go to Petco to replenish our supply of cat treats. He was down to only one bag! Oh noes! To Petco, posthaste!

Petco is next door to Linens N'Things, to which we had a couple of gift cards, so after procuring treats for both kitty and doggy, we went over there and picked up some stuff. We also went to Border's, because I'd received a Border's gift card from Alan's parents and brother for my birthday. After an adventure during lunch, I got home in time to watch Notre Dame make a brilliant comeback at the last minute to smack the Spartans 40 - 37. Go Irish!
